If you are struggling with black spots, mouldand other types of saprophytic fungi in your bathroom, you must get rid of them. All these types of microorganisms are extremely toxic to our body. Mould fungi need moisture to grow, which is why they appear so often in the bathroom on a layer of silicone by the shower tray, washbasin or a bath adjacent to the wall. In addition, their development is favored by the lack of adequate air ventilation, so when fighting fungi from walls or silicone, we should also improve ventilation in the bathroom. In this way, we will respond to the causes of mould growth, which will allow us to fight re-development.
In addition to well-made ventilation, we must get rid of the fungal attack. In one of our clients' bathrooms the mold developed on silicone. The silicone was white, so mould growth was clearly visible. For the first time, silicone from a local store was used to fill joints between tiles. Nobody then suspected that the properties of the product may be relevant. However, several factors influenced the development of fungi:
- Ventilation was too weak - a classic cover was used, without electrical support for air exchange, and the bathroom does not have a window.
- The shower area is fully closed with glass doors, even after taking a shower, because the bathroom is so small that an open shower door would interfere with the household members to use other equipment.
- Product properties - sanitary silicone contains the addition of fungicides - Silicone PCI has high quality fungicides and is safe, it has EC1 plus certificate.
- Product application method - appropriate application affects the durability and preservation of product properties. The surface must be clean, dry and degreased. Smooth and even application on the joint promotes water outflow. Before grouting, it is worth protecting the adjacent surface fragments with paint tape.
After introducing a larger ventilation grille into the bathroom with an additional electric fan, we removed the old joint, cleaned the entire space. Then we used a special preparation for degreasing the surface. The entire surface was thoroughly dried. The remaining surface was secured with masking tape. The brilliant white PCI silicone is evenly distributed in the joint and then smoothed.
Prophylactically, we recommend wiping the joints with chlorine dissolved in water in a 1: 1 ratio once a month, or using chlorine-based agents, e.g. toilet gel, after cleaning the bathroom. Chlorine has bactericidal and disinfecting properties. If you are concerned about the quality of air exchange in your bathroom and you want to protect yourself against mould return, it is worth systematically wiping the grout with a solution of water and chlorine.
An additional recommendation is always the open door to the cabin, especially after a bath. It is also important to heat the room so that all moisture evaporates freely. We recommend installing underfloor heating in the bathroom at the next renovation. Underfloor heating will ensure even distribution of heat throughout the entire interior.
After all, remember to get rid of mould and any visible changes in the care of your health and your loved ones.
