WHAT ISOL ONE SEALING MAT IS

Sealing mats has been present on the market for quite a while now, but are still less popular than liquid foil when it comes to choosing a sealing material for a wetroom for example. However they are still gaining popularity which is not surprising when you consider all their benefits. What exactly is a sealing mat and how to use it?

WHAT IT IS?

The sealing mat, also known as waterproofing membrane, is a special material made of polyethylene film coated with a fiber on both sides, used to insulate the substrate against water in wet conditions. It is a very durable material. Tear resistant and elastic, it bridges cracks in the substrate far more better than a liquid foil. In addition, it is resistant to aging and prevents the formation of mold and fungi on insulated substrate. Despite its little thickness (about 0.5 mm), it also insulates acoustically (at some level). The mat is very easy to use and installation does not require any special training (just follow the manufacturer's instructions). It is produced in rolls with a width of up to two meters, that's why working on large surfaces is very fast. In addition, specially cut and profiled corners, tapes, cuffs for drains and pipes are available. Correctly made bathroom insulation using sealing mats prevents flooding of lower rooms.

WHERE TO USE IT?

The sealing mat is suitable for almost all standard substrates: concrete, bricks, aerated concrete, gypsum boards, stone, timber and plywood. The type of finish also does not matter and it can be successfully used under ceramic tiles, mosaics, stone, terracotta or porcelain tiles. Ideally suited for use in bathrooms when creating a walk-in wet-room shower, around washbasins, bathtubs, in kitchens, as well as on balconies and terraces. Thanks to its high tensile strength it compensates for stresses caused by sudden temperature changes, e.g. on sunny terraces.

HOW TO USE IT?

Installation of the sealing mat is very simple and convenient, however, you should remember a few guidelines. The substrate should be leveled, cleaned of loose material and primed. Use a highly flexible adhesive mortar for gluing. Apply the glue using a notched trowel and smooth the glued mat to remove the air bubbles. In the case of wooden substrates, use a special glue or liquid foil. The mats should be placed on the entire surface without breaks with a minimum of 5 cm overlap on joints glued with liquid foil. Then, glue sealing tapes on all joints of walls and floors with liquid foil. Similarly, glue the corners and cuffs around the water connections. As soon as the adhesive is dry you can start with finishing works.
